The origins

As I have already explained, humain beings have not always helped me in life and I have searched to protect myself from it.

For many years I have separated the different aspects of my life : familly, work, creation, so they would not impede one an other. Familly life represents the quest for a happiness to be built, work was an obligation but also a kind of simple present in a trade between a craft and a task to be done, creativity on the contrary takes roots in a heavy and complicated past I try to make peace with.

The title for this series wants to be a kind of invitation at the end of a letter, an invitation to get into my reunited world.

The format

After my searches for a way to make the humans enter my personnal world I decided to use the square format which I appreciate very much for its stability, balance and simplicity.
When I started as a photographer, I bought a 6×6 Yashika Mat and immediately loved this format.

More over, it enables me to set limits to my gests, to set a frame : I did not want to use the vertical format because I did not want to give them a kind of grandeur, of verticality ; I did not want either to use the horizontal format which would have given them a kind of stability, of base, of easyness

The project

With Jennifer and photographer and ceramist friends we have created a new association called La Caravane des Artistes Correspondants, the intension is to highlight craftworks through photography, video and exhibitions.
To me, it was the perfect project for my new artistic choices.

Three photographers went at the same time in one ceramist’s workshop, my intension was multiple : I wanted to show the different artists’ choises for a same situation. On top of that I used video with a very unobtrusive camera which allowed me to film without they notice.

It was not an easy thing to convince them all of the interest of this odd intention, photographer usualy value the particular moment they share with the artist. But after the first shooting session everybody understood it was not disturbing to be several people at at the same time and it was even pleasant to talk and see how the other works.

The film I made on this work is called Bouillonnement artistique, it aimed at making tangible the creative process of photographers, ceramists and later drawers.
The montage mixing photographs and video of a same moment creates a third dimension with the crossing of the different angles and lets us see the different choices artists do as they work.

The series

As usual my works refers to painting and this time I tried to get closer to a vue which could have inspired artists like Rembrandt or Wermeer in the composition or the light.

The second half of the series refers to artists like Georges de La Tour, it was shot while ceramists were baking their pieces of art in a wood fire, still included in the project of La Caravane, in a very different vibe.
I chose the end of the baking, after twenty four hours of non-stop putting wood in the fire by the ceramists, very little light, exhausted faces, heavy bodies, in the eyes a mix of releif and anxiety about the result of their work.
